Lakeland drops fourth straight as The Villages rolls to 4-0 victory

THE VILLAGES, Fla. -- The road continues to be a tough place for the Lakeland Tropics this year, as they dropped a 4-0 decision to The Villages SC Saturday night in a USL League Two regular season matchup.

It was the third time the two times played each other this season. They first tangled in the U.S. Open Cup, batting to a 1-1 tie through 90 minutes of regulation time and 30 minutes of overtime. The Villages finally took the win in the 10th round of penalty kicks.

They two battled to a 1-1 tie in Bryant Stadium earlier this spring, with The Villages getting the equalizer in second half stoppage times.

However, The Villages jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first half Saturday, and added two more in the final 45 minutes to improve to a division leading 7-1-3.

The Tropics, now 3-6-2, have two more road games -- July 6 at the Treasure Coast Tritons and July 9 at Sarasota Metropolis FC -- before closing out the 2019 season at home July 12 against Florida Elite SA. For information, call 863-240-0101 or visit
