Two pretty goals lift Tropics to third win of season, 2-1 over Weston FC

by Brian Ackley

LAKELAND -- The Lakeland Tropics scored two of their prettiest goals of the season Saturday night to take a 2-1 USL League Two win over  visiting Weston FC at Bryant Stadium.

All the scoring came in the second half, starting in the 50th minute when Rafael Vacas redirected a header by Mark Murphy off a corner kick for a 1-0 lead. In the 83rd minute, Jake Van Der Luit delivered a precision cross to the head of Inti Antunze  to make it a 2-0 lead. For Vacas, it was his team-leading third goal of the year, all in the past two games.

Weston, who fell to 0-8, added a stoppage time goal off a corner but never threatened thereafter as Lakeland improved to 3-2-2, jumping to fourth place in the eight-team Southern Division with 11 points, just three points back of the first place Treasure Coast Tritons.

The Tropics will be on the road Tuesday when they travel to FC Miami City for a 6 p.m. kickoff before returning home Saturday for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff against Sarasota Metropolis FC. Both games will be streamed live at For more information, visit or call 863-240-001
